Game Review (written by Il_palazzo) Added on: 11/15/2006
This neat little game goes to show how much fun a purely text-based game can be. The aim of the game is to progress as far as possible working for a large electronics company called MMC. In the beginning, you are subjected to a job interview in which you answer questions about your qualifications and personal life (if you have played the game before you are given the option to skip this, although it does not take long).
Based on this you are offered a list of jobs to choose from.
Jobs come in 'levels' based on their difficulty, importance, status and wage. At first you are likely to be able to choose from the first 2-3 levels of job depending on your interview and the current state of the economy (in this game, perhaps frustratingly, the state of the economy affects which jobs are available to you when you reapply. If the status is good, you are likely to be able to apply further up the career ladder than you would otherwise, but if the status is poor you may have to move down a level or two through no real fault of your own).
Once you have a job, you are asked a series of multiple choice questions. How well you answer these determines your performance in the job. The questions are well chosen and realistic; obviously chosen by someone with a strong knowledge of the subject matter. They are also by no means easy- you have to take into account the interests of the company, your employees and yourself, and neglecting any of them can cause you serious harm! The aim of the game being to further your career, you may sometimes benefit from another's loss, although your conscience may very well intervene. It is a very nice game in this respect; it appeals to the emotions and challenges you to test your ethics!
When your employee review comes around you have the chance to change career. Here, you may apply for better jobs in the company. You will be judged on your past work record, so earlier mistakes can affect your chances! The more advanced positions are suitably more challenging, and accordingly require a little more business sense. As well as skill, career progression is also a race against time, as you aren’t getting any younger! When you reach a certain age, retirement beckons. When you retire, or if you are fired, you are shown your overall performance in the game, including your total salary, so you may test your skills against them in the future!
Overall, I recommend this game thoroughly. It may be text based but for once that is a truly suitable medium. Despite taking a very short time (much less than an hour) to play through it is a pleasant and fun distraction and can be enjoyed many times over without becoming too repetitive. There is a wide variety of different jobs and each has a large number of possible situations, so each one is by no means the same each time through. It may weigh in at less than 150kB, but it is definitely worth one of your precious download slots!
