Game Review (written by Michelle) Added on: 12/30/2007
Fast Attack is a highly underrated submarine simulation video game that was developed by Software Sorcery. The company included experienced former US Navy officers, so this game made it possible to get a glimpse of what it is actually like to be inside a submarine and experience combat. It was way ahead of its time when it comes to realism.
The game lets you go through tutorial missions so you can get a good feel of the interface. You have the option of three levels of difficulty. There are a variety of locations where your combat can take place, such as the Mediterranean Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Sea of Japan. Each mission has a two hour time limit. That might not please some players, as that could cause someone to make rash decisions, possibly leading to a failed attack.
If you’re looking to cheat on this game…it might be tough, as there is no real time map view to let you locate targets. If you are using satellite or sonar you have a map view, but the sonar might be inaccurate if your tracking skills aren’t that great. This feature adds to the realism. The torpedoes that you fire are wire-guided and need to be sure what you target is your enemy, because even friendly vessels will fire back if fired upon. One bit of non-realism is that when one of your torpedoes or harpoons hits a target, your view is cut away so you can see the hit—in 3-D.
To add to the realism, radio messages are authentic and the missions are challenging—not made simple so you can get through them easily. Game control screens are nicely detailed and easily playable. Most of the time, it takes just a few clicks to start an action. But in the fire control station you have to use your mouse to align green dots in order to accurately target your enemy, and this can take a lot of clicking.
Don’t forget, you are also a target in this game. If you are targeted by an enemy a directional scope will tell you what direction the threat is coming from and how far away the threat is. The graphics are good animated and colorful!
If you are willing to let one thing slide, the fact that there is no Save Game option, then you just might enjoy this game. The realism and good 3-D graphics should appeal to the sim gamers, making this game worth a try. I highly recommend it to everyone!
