High Seas Trader

Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 11/22/2007
High Seas Trader is a pirate type game with more of a focus on trading and commerce. It is reminiscent of the modern day’s Trade Winds series or the classic PC games such as Uncharted Waters or Ports of Call.
Set in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, High Seas Trader is a simulation game that involves serious business savvy. Prices, mark ups, and reputation all factor into the success of trades. There are pirates attempting to loot your gold and your merchandise, or just plain steal your ship, enemies of your country are all over the waters, and some cities can turn hostile in a heartbeat.
The time frame in which High Seas Trader takes place is also a factor, since many colonies were at war amongst themselves or their mother countries. Heck, the mother countries didn’t even get along! This is a definite factor when you are flying one country’s flag. And of course, war always changes the needs of a country and those around it.
You begin with a less than stellar ship, a couple men and a few bucks. Through lucrative trade, you must increase your fleet in order to haul more cargo and increase your sailing crew to man the ships and defend them. Gather maps and improve your trade routes and goods and buy more ships. There are six different types of ship, each with positives and negatives. Some can hold more goods, but are slower. Others are more equipped with cannons than hold space and so forth. A little luck in the beginning a good fleet once you can afford it will help you to succeed in High Seas Trader.
This is a fun trading game, but it does get somewhat tedious. Still, there always seems to be a new challenge popping up and there are extra ways to make money besides trading. Sometimes you can help people move from place to place or take out a specific enemy to your crown. The animation is colorful and fun! Still, there is plenty managing from your price list of goods to feeding your crew in order to succeed at High Seas Trader. If you are looking from a shoot ‘em up, take a different route, but as economically accurate simulations go, this is a gem.
If you like this sort of game this game is for you! I highly recommend downloading it now! I’m sure you’ll be so impressed and satisfied!

Remember Pirates? Well, High Seas Trader is a bit like the Microprose classic but more oriented to trade and less to action. It will take You a lot of time to beat some of the game's parts (like combat and navigation) but as soon as You figure it out You will enjoy in this, rather complex game. An interesting mix of trade and combat.
