LHX Attack Chopper is a helicopter war simulation game for the PC that was developed by a retired U.S. Army soldier, Brent Iverson. Iverson was also noted for his role in developing Chuck Yeager’s Air Combat for DOS, and helped to provide another realistic game in LHX, released in 1990.
This game features two different attack helicopters used to fly in the three different mission scenarios (Libya, East Germany and Vietnam). The first is the Light Helicopter Experimental from which the game takes its name. The second is the classic AH-64A Apache. There are also two cargo helicopters available, the Black Hawk and the Osprey. It is a single player game.
At the beginning, players choose from the missions listed and selected one of five difficulty levels based on their skill and experience. Pilots were then briefed on both the primary and secondary goal of the mission, with only the former being required to complete the level. The secondary mission was used for honour, points and a distraction. After listening to the briefing, pilots then had to choose from the four available helicopters. In instances where the mission consisted of transporting cargo, or moving passengers, only the Black Hawk and Osprey were available as viable selections. Players chose the payload of the chopper based on the selected mission. Gamers could choose many types of weapons ranging from anti-aircraft to anti-tank and everything in between.
After outfitting the chopper, the mission begins in earnest and the pilot lifts off from the runway and enters the combat zone. LHX features many structures that can be destroyed for the fun of it. Primarily, though, the enemy engaged was Soviet in nature and force the gamer to use advanced piloting skills, as well as countermeasures such as flares to avoid enemy fire and complete the mission. As the chopper takes damage from suffering enemy hits, components on the chopper are rendered inoperable or less effective, altering the way the machine flew.
LHX basically runs along the career of a single pilot who flies all missions. Points are accumulated from successful runs, and honours and medals are bestowed upon the pilot. If the pilot dies, however, the gamer has to start over with a new avatar and strike up an entirely fresh career. Therefore, it is imperative to keep the pilot alive and flying in order to advance in rank.
LHX features graphics that were appropriate for its time and great sound effects. The controls are easy to use and the game can be played repeatedly without tedium due to the customizable nature of the choppers and their payloads. Moreover, the missions randomly generate. Overall, this is good helicopter sim that will provide hours of entertainment without requiring three days of manual study to learn.
