Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 12/29/2007
The Safe Opening Simulator is not a simulation that is going to trick anyone with its clever title. It is, in fact, a safe opening simulator. It can also be termed a lesson in burglary, since many of the skills needed to succeed at the Safe Opening Simulator could easily be transferred to a real life situation, mostly due to the Safe Opening Simulator’s realism.
Safe Opening Simulator is an obscure European title and it features many different types of European safes and locks. The user must study the safe before him and determine what type or brand of safe it is. Most every aspect of the safe will have been realistically rendered, such as the type of lock it holds (keyed, combination, the number of tumblers etc.), the manufacturer and model style of the safe, and the approximate year in which it was built. All of this information is supposed to offer clues to the user as to what will be necessary to crack the safe and get inside.
To crack the safe, the user has many tactics available. There is a trial and error strategy for combinations, explosives, drills, lock picks, and so forth. The user must choose the appropriate tools and attack the safe. This is a very difficult game for most users, since very few people probably know much about the intricate workings of various types of locks. However, the game does try to tutor the user in this art. When the gamer makes a mistake or gives up on a lock, the game will offer a tutorial that explains what type of safe and lock the user had miscued upon, and will then offer advice on the best way to break into it…sort of for future reference.
Aside from the actual game play, Safe Opening Simulator does not have much to offer in the way of graphics, sound or any other pizzazz found in more modern simulation games. The renderings of the various safes are good enough for the user to tell them apart, but in the game’s defense, there is very little one could do to spice up the look of a safe. Therefore, the game is not colorful or interesting to look at. The display looks like…a safe. There is an occasional click or clunk while attempting to open the safe, but there is no eerie Jeopardy music playing in the background to add to the concentration. In short, Safe Opening Simulator is a one of a kind. Maybe it’s for you.
