Game Review (written by Gamer007) Added on: 10/12/2006
Sopwith was one of, if not the very first pc game I ever played. Many years ago as a kid, I remember sneaking into my father’s office at nights just to play this game. This soon became my favorite game at the time, and I remember spending a lot of time trying to get to the next level.
I don't know if the game actually had an ending, it just seemed there were more enemy planes and everything was faster. The graphics were very basic, with little v's for birds and such, but the gameplay was fun. The view is a side-shot angle and the map scrolls left to right with varying terrain. There is no up or down scrolling and if you go to high, your plane stalls out and you have to regain control. There were other little planes that seemed to guard an area. Many times your goal was to bomb that area, while trying to avoid the enemy planes. If you shot down the enemy planes, more would sprout up out of their base.
The main strategy involved learning how to loop-de-loop and dive bomb while timing your machine gun shots and simple air deploy bombs. Your shots seemed to be limited and many times I would have to commit suicide by dive bombing into the ground to restart with a fresh supply of ammo.
My favorite tactic was to fly as high as the screen would allow and dive bombing straight down and letting a bomb go... Many times if I pulled out of the dive bomb the wrong way, I would end up running straight into the bomb, but if done right it was a cool move.
The sound effects amused me quite a bit. The machine gun bullets were little .............. lines and if you shot down an enemy plane the smoke would descend after the plane with the same little dotted lines, a little more spread apart.
Worth checking out if the old classics amuse you, although I haven't played the game for ages, when seeing it on this site I was instantly reminded of how much fun I used to have playing the game. As an avid gamer, I seem to enjoy games with more substance and strategy now, I just may download the game for giggles and to show my son what kind of games were state of the art when I was his age. Many of the games on here were probably too advanced for my dad's computer at that time, but sopwith would run smooth mostly.
