If you are at this Starglider 2 page then you have definitely got taste. It was released in 1988 by Argonaut games you got a book and some other bits ah who cares about that bit. The Icarus was its name and it was designed as a police space car by Dragon industries as I recall and they only had the one prototype, which was to be used against the Egrons who were at it again. The Egrons had invaded the local star system which had about 9 planets to visit and several small moons which could all be visited by your new little space ship!
You started off on the surface of the third planet (coincidentally). No more line drawings in this game. Full shaded vector graphics were with lots of things bouncing around to shoot at. And there were really lots of things to shoot at. Flying wedges like the original Starglider, lots of silos to blow up but also plenty of things that were fixed to the ground making weird movements.
There were also haulage trains that just went bang in a fantastic way spewing their contents everywhere. There were always spaceships flying around in large enough quantity’s to be interesting but not too many as you die the second they attack.
Each planet had a network of tunnels which you flew into which took you from one side of the planet to the other. In those tunnels you would find service bays which held engineers, weapons and the mission plot. To start off the engineers told you they needed some supplies before they would help you, namely wood for toothpicks as their staple diet was candy from another planet Castro. They also needed the professor called Halsem Taymar. He was needed to build the large atomic device required later in the game.
So off you trundled looking for the list of things needed to work through the puzzles. And this was what kept me going to ages. If I didn’t want to play the game puzzles I just flew round shooting ships. When I was ready back I would go to the plot.
There were no problems with power this time either. The power lines were easy to use but you could also recharge using the sun, breaking up meteors, collecting gases. It was just easier to stay alive and have fun.
Traveling from planet to planet was easy with its hyper drive. Odd weapons were around to slow you down and you were just never bored. So should you decide to download this I would expect anyone who liked Elite or Starglider to enjoy this game. I know I sure did.
