Game Review (written by Lindsay2) Added on: 11/29/2007
T.F.X. is a combat flight simulation game. This is the first game for its time that actually brought reasonably good 3D graphics to the playing field of computers. The F-22, Euro Fighter and the F-117A Stealth Fighter in this game look pretty realistic and close to the actual aircrafts. You still get to use the weapons and blow things up with these aircrafts. Your weapons include, but are not limited to, missiles, laser guided bombs, cannons, a laser missile, and you can even use your drop tanks. It also has a basic stealth/radar version of the F-117A which makes some of the missions for that plane seems a little uncomfortably confined at times.
The game play is pretty simple and basic. First you must train which gets you used to the game and the game controls. The training consists of small missions that range anywhere from very easy to extremely hard. After you get done your training, you are ready for the big leagues. Hopefully you have mastered the controls and planes by now because if not, you can be in for a world of trouble.
In your real missions, you will be serving under a UN task force and you get to travel to different places of conflict. Some areas of conflict include the Middle East, the Balkans and even protecting oil fields in the Falkland Islands. Some missions are based on aircraft carriers which means testing your landing skills (made even harder if your plane has some damage from battle). Each mission does follow its very own story line, which makes the game not as boring as it may sound. The only problem with that is since the story line is pretty much fixed, if you mess up the mission, you just have to keep going because there are no variations. The missions are varied in their own way since you get to change your weapons and strategies, which helps when you mess up. That only helps you the most when you replay the mission though.
You can create your own missions by choosing from a very long list of target areas and starting points. When you do this you can set up aircraft to aircraft refuelling if you plan on making it a long mission. You can even set up your own mission to be on the enemy’s side if you want and tune up the difficulty level to hard. So basically setting up your own missions can be both good and bad depending on how you do it. With pretty good 3D graphics and sound for its time, this game also gives a first person view of play as an option. A very good flight simulator game for its time.
