Game Review (written by Chrissi) Added on: 11/23/2007
Test Drive is a racing simulation that has a mix of racing and arcade games that consist of five different sports cars to select from to drive. You will be driving on a mountain strip doing the fastest speeds possible without being caught by the police. You are equipped with a radar detector that shows where the police are located and avoid them, or take a chance and run from them. Each vehicle has manual stick shift, so it’s best to get the hang of things before you go on a chase, just in case you redline and blow up your engine.
The graphics have been done with a more advanced arcade feature in the first person perspective. You will see the inside of the car from the drivers’ perspective and the terrain on the other side of your window. All the graphics have been done quite well for the year of release. At the checkpoints you will see a side view of your vehicle, which has been done with a lot of detail on every aspect. The game has quite superb graphics that give it a great appeal to many gamers who enjoy this kind of racing simulations.
The game has a lot of realistic aspects that you would encounter in the real world of today. You will run into traffic, which will make you have to manoeuvre through the traffic quickly but safely while trying to maintain your speed. There are radar traps everywhere throughout this game so there are so many chances of the police catching you. It’s great that you are able to get a nice police chase going and hopefully be able to loose them in time.
The only downside to this game is that each scenario looks quite similar. There are no houses or trees incorporated into the game. There are just a few traffic signs coming your way now and again. The controls also are a little complicated for a racing simulation. With the use of the keyboard for controlling you will find that you are running into problems every once in awhile. If you have a joystick it’s time to set it up and put it to good use, but this can get difficult too since the steering wheel doesn’t centre itself automatically. Then again, you might find it to be tons of fun driving like a drunk for a few hours.
Test Drive has definitely been a great addition to the gaming world. It has opened a lot of new doors to creators of games that weren’t willing to take the risk and attempt the creation of such a wonderful game. This game is great to play especially if you love running from the police and not actually getting thrown in jail for real. If you’ve enjoyed racing simulations over the years and would love to kick back and play a classic, Test Drive would be the one you may want to try since there are so many things about it that just make it so wonderful.
