Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 12/24/2007
Top Gun: Fire At Will is an arcade action and flight simulation hybrid that is good modeled after the movie of the same title. Its goal is entertainment as opposed to realism, and features a low complexity level compared to cool simulations. It was designed by Spectrum Holobyte.
The game begins at the Top Gun Flight School in San Diego, California where the user is learning to pilot an F-14 Tomcat. The user plays the part of overconfident rookie pilot, Maverick. Together with his copilot Merlin, he must learn the ins and outs of combat flight and compete for the much coveted Top Gun Trophy.
The quest for the trophy is a mission based style of play, with the user trying to complete twenty levels that consist of various quests in war torn areas such as Libya and Korea. The wingmen that accompany Maverick and Merlin on these missions can be selected from a list of pilots straight from the movie. There are cut scenes in the full version of the game that do an excellent job of introducing the characters for the people who have not seen the move. Each character has a small dossier to fill the user in on their strengths and weaknesses. The downside of having such important characters as wingmen is the fact that they must be kept alive in order to advance the plot and be offered ensuing missions. Sometimes, depending on the wingman and the mission, this is much easier said than done. The plot and missions are linear, so a slip up in this area could prematurely end the game.
The play itself is decent enough, barring the lack of realism that many hardcore simulation enthusiasts will be looking for. The pilot can use smart bombs, missiles and other weapons to attack the enemy and help defend the wingmen. Merlin is always on the lookout for approaching enemies and will offer advice and warnings throughout each battle. Since the game focuses on arcade action, the virtual cockpit is quite unnecessary, since the user cannot interact with it in any way. It adds to the overall effect, however, and provides more of a sense of actually being in the cockpit of the world’s most famous fighter plane.
As a whole, Top Gun: Fire At Will is a great game! If you want to spend your free time with pleasure you need downloading this game!
