Game Review (written by Poselecta) Added on: 10/25/2007
Wings of Glory is a game where you fly World War I planes, first person perspective, shooting down "Huns" (i.e. the Germans) on countless skirmishes. You begin as a novice pilot, but as you rack up the number of sorties, and of course the number of enemies you shoot down, the higher your score and more importantly, the higher your reputation. You even develop a rivalry against an arch-nemesis, whose name escapes me, flying in a red plane ala. The Red Baron, competing against you for number of kills. Those were also the day where you could get shot but still survive, perhaps crash landing but hopefully not on enemy territory. This is where the game adds another dimension. In addition to the lure of seeing your name at the top of the kill’s board, the game plays out your story during the war. This is nicely presented between your sorties with newspaper articles, your diary extracts etc. So getting captured pretty much destroys all the hard work you put in. Seeing you getting decorated with an ever increasing array of medals was definitely rewarding. The graphics were clean and the animation smooth - even looking at it now it is still more than adequate. The game is also included the judicious use of guns at the front of the plane and the rear gunner, switching views so you could protect your plane in a 360 degree arc.
In conclusion, it wasn't the most sophisticated game, it wasn't particularly outstanding, but it was fun to play. It's a good game which provides a little background of the First World War and would even provide a useful way of introducing such a topic to younger children. I would highly recommend this game - very good game.
