Game Review (written by Kjaime) Added on: 03/14/2008
3D pool was a simulation of pool released way back in the day. At the time it was quite swish with the 3D graphics making it quite novel.
You had the choice of practice, trick-shot and tournament game modes. Practice is self-explanatory, Trick-shot set the balls up for a trick shot and left you to judge where to strike the cue ball and with how much power to complete it and of course the heart of the game was Tournament. For the Tournament you were entered into a knockout cup with various pool professionals (probably mythical but I couldn't say for sure).
All usual options for applying spin and power were present, the rebound from cushions worked okay although there were no subtle physics applied to the "jaws" of pockets.
The game was quite a challenge with no helpful "angle guidelines" as an option, let alone default and to my memory I don't think you got a straight line even to see where exactly where you were sending the cue ball... Plenty of practice needed to become consistent at that unless perhaps you're a pro pool player in real life. Assuming you're as bad as I remember myself and all friends being, you'd be lucky to muddle past the first opponent in the tournament, let alone win it. The only helpful thing was the pretty vague "collision detection" around the pockets, with shots you'd swear were missing even the jaws plonking happily in. Of course the same thing happened with your opponent's shots so that bit of help arguably cancels itself out and instead just becomes a bit of incompetence in the programming...
In truth the more I think about it the more I'd be surprised if anyone downloads this. It was an okay game at the time, the only pool sim of its type that I was aware of but now it's only got any value as either a vague nostalgic curio (it's surely a long way down anyone who played its list of games that have nostalgia value!) or else for its part in the evolutionary trail of pool and snooker sims. For all other purposes it's redundant having been superseded by games like Archer Maclean's Pool and (also by AM) Jimmy White's Whirlwind Snooker, which are themselves now 15 years old (give or take, at time of writing).
On the other hand, if crude 3D has some sort of buzz factor for you or more ideally, crude 3D sports simulations or, the zenith, crude, massively dated, dog 3D sims of billiards-derived games that are very hard and inferior to games from 15 years past and modern free sims of such sports riddling the internet... You've found your slice of Valhalla. Enjoy...
