First, choose a team and a difficulty level to suit your own personal taste. Gamers can choose to be either human or alien athletes. Games are generally only seven minutes in length and can be won in a manner of ways.
The most accepted way is to score more goals than the opposition. The ghastly way is by decapitating six of the opposing players before time runs out. Players can gain possession of the ball by tackling, kicking and punching their opponents, after all, there are no referees. Each player has an individual tackling style, usually involving a specific weapon.
Direct the quarterback to run plays, as a normal quarterback would, choosing from runs, passes or kicks. The defence will try to hamper play using a variety of bonus weapons found on the field, such as bombs, swords, shields and rabbits/tortoises. There are also obstacles in the stadium that need to be negotiated to reach the goal. Many of them may be bomb craters or body parts from previous tackles in the ball game. After the end of the allotted time, the team with the most points wins if there are still enough athletes standing to field a team. In the gruesome event of a tie, the game goes into sudden death, which is aptly named. It is a killing fest.
Brutal Sports Football is well-named and is not shy about showing blood and guts, and players should not be surprised to see dead or maimed players carted off the field on stretchers. The AI is pretty competent, but the game is better played against a friend. The game play is fast-paced and relatively smooth, but the animation is a little bit choppy. Still, the premise of Brutal Sports Football is just too gory and off-centre to pass up.
