Game Review (written by Eric) Added on: 01/05/2008
Dave Mirra is a game was released during the time extreme sports gained immense popularity. The game will have you playing the role of a pro-biker, competing in tournaments.
In the proquest mode, you choose which one among the world-class BMX freestylists you will play and then, like how pro-BMXers career paths go, as you play the game you will have to move on to higher levels in the game, earn sponsored clothing, get new bikes and others. The game will start with the easy tracks and then increase in difficulty as you move along the game. Each track will have a definite objective and the challenges in each track are based on this objective. To do well in the game, you must make sure that you are able to upgrade your bike to meet the demands of the more difficult tracks. There are two other modes in the game—the free ride and the session. These two modes will serve as practice modes for those who are pretty new in the extreme games genre.
If you are new to extreme games, it may take a while before you master all the combination moves that will allow you to perform tricks on your bike and earn higher points. But the game play is easy for those who have played at least one extreme video game before.
What makes performing tricks difficult in this game is how your depth perspective seems to be screwed. It is pretty inconsistent which makes connecting with items on the screen difficult. This makes maneuvering your bike difficult as it will be hard to measure your distance from an obstacle. This is actually one of the major bummers for the game because isn’t that what extreme gaming is all about? Being able to measure your distance from the ground and the obstacles correctly allowing you to perform the tricks at the precise time you need to.
The graphics of the game is good with enough details on the screen to keep you interested although some parts would still appear pixilated. So when you consider that this game was released in 2000 and not in the 90s, I suppose you would expect that the graphics and the game play of this game would be more advanced and solid.
