Game Review (written by Kansasjhawk044) Added on: 04/02/2007
Earl Weaver Baseball 2 is a well known family classic. It got its start in the golden days of video games. Along with John Madden Football, this game helped make Electronic Arts what it is today. It had the simple graphics known at the time, but they're easily up to par for the standards of the day. With the beautiful green grass, green stands, and well, green sky you can really get that classic feel only a day at the ballpark can bring.
One of the best features is the amount of rosters you can create, and those that are already there for your use. How about a rematch of the '85 world series? Go right ahead and watch the Royals win again! Unlike most celebrity endorsed games, Earl Weaver Baseball 2 actually had Earl Weaver in there! If you don't know what to do, just ask ol' Earl's advice and he'll come to the rescue.
In traditional Electronic Arts fashion, this was one of the first games to have the official MLBPA license, and to feature real life players. It's always fun to go find Roger Clemens to, and compare how much younger he looked back in the day, compared to today ;-). Here's also one of the first games (after its predecessor Earl Weaver Baseball) to have a complicated batting type. Instead of just swinging the bat when the ball came flying by, you actually have to predict different types of pitches, and react to them.
The Earl Weaver Baseball series was sadly killed by a late release on EWB2 in late '91, but went down in history immediately as one of the fathers of modern games. In a comparison between Earl Weaver Baseball and Earl Weaver Baseball 2 you'll quickly notice several nice upgrades. The most prominent of these new features was the first 3D video camera in baseball, which gave off a truly realistic baseball experience for that time. There were still several bugs in EWB2 though, causing EA to try and put together a version 1.1, but it was never released. Earl Weaver Baseball 2 never received the hype of its founding father but it is surely a worth while game if you have time to spend on it. But be warned, you'll become quickly addicted! I give this game an 8.5/10 (based on other games at the time).
