Kick Off 2 is a deeply entertaining and engrossing little soccer game that was released in the early nineties. Following its predecessor, Kick Off, Kick Off 2 features excellent game play and accuracy, superior graphics for its time, and many customizable features. It won the 1990 Images Golden Joystick Award for Game of the Year and also the French magazine publisher award, Til ‘dor, also in 1990.
Kick Off 2 featured many new innovations in soccer style games that are now nearly standards. There were customizable team colours and shirts, many different field types, and customizable tactics for play.
It also was the first game to feature “after touch”. After touch was a ball controlling feature that allowed the user to put spin, height and force into kicking the ball, allowing for more control and more accurate play.
Kick Off 2 is fast-paced and is played according to tactics. Everything on the field is in the correct position, from the players to the markings. The ball travels ahead of the players and is affected by the pitch of the field. Ball position makes tackling a tactical manoeuvre, which is very realistic. Players must move to appropriate positions to make and receive passes and move the ball up the field.
Kick Off 2 features a highly recommended practice section where the user can practice shooting, attempt free kicks,
dribble, and pass. This feature will improve the player’s accuracy and familiarity with the controls without being harassed by the opposition. It is also a great opportunity for players in cooperative multi-player to practice with one another.
All players have skill ratings that are appropriate for the degree of difficulty the user selects. This feature is also customizable, and it is possible to change the sill ratings of each player. There are internationally ranked players and others in the numbered divisions. The teams can play in leagues or in cup tournaments. There is also a single match option.
In summary, Kick Off 2 features great realistic game play that will appear to the hardcore soccer fan. It is not a management simulation so much as a fast-paced sports adventure, and it is highly recommended for download.
