Game Review (written by Ca1vinbr0adus) Added on: 07/04/2007
A solid release that was unfortunately beaten by bigger better releases around that time.
Games such as Multi Player Soccer Manager (MPSM), Premier Manager and the early Championship Manager received much more acclaim than The Manager. Although very similar in term of financial commitments to you chosen club and how players are upgraded and rated, the other games went more in depth with regard to player attributes and skill level. 3 main factors were all that made up how your players performed, they were "skill", "fitness" and "form". This left very little variation from players to players and the true superstars were marginally separated from the bums of the league.
A good effort for the time it was released and the games released around it. Features such as training camps and pre-season training schedules were an attractive feature that with more depth could have taken the game to the next level of soccer manager simulations.
All the major competitions are there with the FA Cup in the domestic leagues and the major European trophies are also built in to the game. UEFA Cup and European Cup are both there and even the old Cup Winners Cup is in the game. As we all now this cup is now not functioning!
A nostalgic look at football management games is what you get from this game. It is more amusing than addictive but its novelty will have you firing it up again and again. Maybe 6 months apart, but you will keep coming back to this one. It certainly is no Football Manager of even premier Manager, but if you take it for what it is then you can have a right old time with this one.
Best recommended for Students who have little else to do. If you only have 2 hours per day to spare on gaming, you should probably give this one a miss and go for something you can just pick up and play right away. It's the kind of manager game that you will keep starting over and over and never actually get a 5 year dynasty going due to lack of sustainable interest.
Also, it’s a good laugh to go back and see the random names for players, there are no Rooneys or Ronaldos to be seen and basically all the major players of today are not featured (obviously).
Overall, a novelty game which will do you no harm. give it a shot, then put it in the cupboard!

Kijir (02/15/2007) It was a great game to play, it was a classic like the other manager games out there. I love the game play which was exciting. It has an edge on the other manager games in the market. |
