Manchester United Europe was an enjoyable football sim, that places the player into the situation of guiding Manchester United to European glory. Although many of the modern-day sports sims allow you play through the qualification stages in order to reach the elite levels of competition, Manchester United Europe was probably one of the first sims to give the player the opportunity to do so. Aside from the competition option, Manchester United Europe also has the head-to-head option, where the player can choose to play for or against any of the clubs featured within the game.
However, you can only play as Manchester United in competition mode.
Manchester United Europe also has two player option for both the competitive and exhibition options. One of the more interesting options on the version I had gave the opportunity for one player to play as the field players, and the other player can play as the goalkeeper for the same side.
Overall, it could be challenging at times, and confusing when trying to understand whether or not your side had made it into the UEFA or Champions League, but the general gameplay is straightforward and easy to follow. At the time of release, Manchester United Europe was one of the more interesting and enjoyable sports sims at the time, and was rarely surpassed (until the advent of EA
Sports, and their series of sports sims).
Manchester United Europe is an enjoyable nostalgic trip back to European football in the 1990s, where you can play for or against your favourite heroes/villains, or even play for or against clubs that may or may not still be in the premier leagues of Europe. This game is definitely worth giving a go, although there are a plethora of football sims for all kinds of systems that you can choose from. The only criticism of the game is that it is too Manchester United-focused. If the game was marketed for the general European football market, then the game would have been more openly accepted rather than being marketed solely for Manchester United fans only. Aside from this criticism, Manchester United Europe is good fun, and I recommend this game to any avid football fan and/or any football enthusiast seeking their fix of football goodness.
