Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 12/27/2007
Micro League Baseball was the first installment in a long line of baseball simulations bearing this title. It was both developed and published by the Micro League Sports Association and was released in the middle eighties. It features a third-person perspective and management style play. Micro League Baseball allows head to head play, and also games against fairly competent artificial intelligence.
Micro League Baseball was one of the first titles that was officially licensed by Major League Baseball and was allowed to display real teams, statistics and players. All of the games from the era were featured, as well as those from the past. The user could effectively pit a club from the late twenties against one from the middle seventies, and accurately simulate play. The players were licensed, and there were (and still are) many sites that would allow users to download up-to-date statistics on modern players.
Micro League Baseball focused on game play as opposed to flashy graphics and cut scenes. Each play is shown, but the title does not feature the pizzazz of modern games. Still, the game play was fresh and exciting in its time, and its ability to render an accurate simulation still lends it value and replay value in today’s market.
The user has control of most every facet of the game. He decides on appropriate warm-ups for his players, in an attempt to reduce the risk of injury. He chooses how aggressively or defensively the team will play. There are seven basic types of batting strategies from which the user can choose. He can also position the fielder and determine where the ball will be throws. He has options when pitching, as well. Players, as previously mentioned, can be injured and will need suitable replacements. He is also responsible for all substitutions, such as hitting and pitching, throughout the play of the game. The user even has the ability to order stolen bases and to argue with the umpires over questionable calls.
In short, whatever happens in this true management simulation is entirely up to the user. It is a great little game, better in its time, and features a good level of replayability because of its many options. It is recommended for download by any fans of the sport of baseball or people who are micromanagers at heart.
