Game Review (written by Michelle) Added on: 01/31/2008
Pool Champion isn’t just your regular sports video game. The goal is more than just trying to win a game. There is an adventure to be had here. And there is an air of realism that a simulation game has.
Before you start, you can watch a game demo to familiarize yourself with the game. You can decide to play the game against the computer or another player, or you can practice by yourself. Or there is the “Great American Pool Adventure" in which you play against many opponents.
The types of pool you can play in Pool Champion are: Eight Ball, Nine Ball, Ten Ball, Fifteen Ball, 14.1 Continuous, and Rotation. Before this game I’ve only heard of Eight, Nine, and Rotation. If you’re like me and don’t know how to play them all, there is a manual that will tell you the rules for each game and how to play them.
One great feature of this video game is that you don’t play pool in one location. This greatly helps on keeping the game from getting boring too soon. Changing the location also adds to realism—as in real life, you often go to different game rooms or bars to play, not sticking with one place. You can play in your basement, at the Bar & Grill, at the Chopper Club, at the Pool Hall, in Las Vegas, and at the Tournament. Also, when you change location your opponents change. In the basement you get to play your Uncle Charlie, among a few others. And at the Chopper Club you get to play against the biker guys.
Now as to how the Great American Pool Adventure works. When you start the adventure, you begin with Uncle Charlie. Once you beat him, who is the person who taught you how to play, you move on to other players. These games aren’t just for fun, as there’s a wager involved. Plus, you are beating these increasingly difficult players with a goal in mind: earn enough money so you can go to Las Vegas to play in the National Pool Championship.
There are a few options you can set according to your gaming preferences. Ball numbers can be on or off. If you choose to have the aiming lines on, then you will be able to see where the cue ball will go after the shot is made. If the auto aim option is on, after you make your shot in 3-D, you will return to the overhead view when the balls stop rolling. If you want to compete with your opponent as to who breaks, then the Lag for a break option needs to be on. There are also audio settings you can change. They are for setting the sound effects, voices, spectators, and music.
Pool Champion gives the game of pool an extra zing with great sound effects and a nice playing atmosphere. And with its adventure, this isn’t just your ordinary rack ‘em up pool game. So grab your chalk and download this fun game.
