This soccer game is as entertaining now, as it was 10 years ago. The nostalgia factor alone merits the need to download it. Sometimes when I play it I feel like I am really in the game running around the field frolicking with the rest of the ensemble cast of Lord of the Rings the Return on the King. It even reminds of my first college soccer game when I scored two goals during my first game. The next game I scored a goal also, but it was not at home.
Anyway, the graphics of the game are pretty awesome, but typical of the nineteen ninety eight time period. If you want to feel like you are playing a super nintendo or sega genissess it is right along in that category. It also traces britney spears back to a much hotter era when men were men and boys were boys, but this has nothing to do about soccer, and we want to talk about soccer.
The controls of the game kind of suck, but then again they do for any soccer game that struggles toe emulate the individual and tactical skill that is necessary to create a great or awesome or super game, but are hard to render complete. That is the beauty of
football games, because on offence the gamer can feel that he is in control of the entire game, where as in soccer the less scripted flow makes it very tough to feel like you are having the right centre back or the offensive centre midfielder make a long or bleak run down the far sideline.
It also does not lend to some of the deeper strategies of individualism and team goals that are part of soccer. Charles Taylor in his book the ethics of authenticity talks about this in large depth when he discusses the idea of the dark side of individualism as it relates to the centring of the self.
Sensible Soccer 98 is itself a manifestation of individualism in the wake of the proliferation of technology over the past three hundred years in all over western culture. I realize that as gaming systems have become capable of having more then one controller the idea of gaming has become more social, but it is also important to realize that single player games still sell the best.
And this is why I love sensible soccer 98. You should download it sometime it will change your world.
