Game Review 1 (written by Shent05) Added on: 09/22/2006
Sensible World of Soccer has to be the greatest ever football simulator. Many hours of my youth were spent searching through the Indian and Asian leagues trying to find a player with the pace of Jean Pierre Papin and the shot power of Pierre Van Hoojidonk.
A truly excellent football game that never gets boring, the graphics are so basic and the controls so simple, but the entire same if you a score a diving header there is no better feeling. Any person who spent there early teens in the 90's will swear by this game, its the only reason why I haven't sold my Amiga 600 and Jet fighter joystick yet. Anybody who plays this game must sigh Hugo the left winger from Flamengo in Brazil he is awesome.
The tactics of this game are very simple send a long ball from defense by passing the midfield to your star striker. You really have to make an effort to involve your left and right wingers, and your full backs are none existent, but if you do get them involved you can string together some nice short passing play which makes your eventual goal so much more enjoyable.
This is the only game that can be genuinely gutting when you see your little man go down from a tackle and lie there injured, i was depressed for hours when Davor Suker was injured for 8 weeks, done get me wrong I had a good replacement in Patrice Loko, but Suker had banged 47 goals and that’s not easy to come to terms with.
The players come in only three varieties, ginger haired blokes, black haired blokes and Black blokes, but even with this small selection it is still surprising how accurate some of these chaps are to the actual players, Andy Impey looks identical to the Andy Impey in sensible soccer and I always thought Jose Dominguez was a bit of a ringer too. But seriously this is the best Amiga game ever and has to be one of the all time greats. Sensible were on top of the world this Sensible Soccer, Cannon Fodder and Meglomania it’s just a shame they never really moved with the times as they would be producing top titles now.
Top 10 in the all time game greats!
| | | | | Game Review 2 (written by Andykirk81) Added on: 09/19/2006 The first time I played SWOS it was an emotional ordeal - coming bottom of the premier with
Liverpool after watching them so close to winning the title in real life!! However after mastering the 4-4-2 formation with a defender in midfield and tucking the wingers in the victories flowed and after conquering the transfer system by negotiating juicy exchange deals the squad was full and the team was winning. What a game!
The scope of the transfer market is something to behold as well. My only frustration with it was the lack of depth in a squad e.g. when I acquired the great Alan Shearer from Blackburn for a bargain ten million pounds I was astonished to discover a john smith worth the same value had replaced him! How does that work!
In addition the attention to detail was somewhat lacking - e.g. the computer continually played
Ruud Gullit on the bench for Chelsea! And when players were on the transfer list the clubs still continued to demand double the value in some cases!
Overall in terms of player database the information is second to none - however it is restricted which is where the championship manager series comes into its own! The combination of playing and managing a side to such depth held its own in the market place for quite some time. It is unfortunate that the designers of the game pulled the plug as the advances in gaming technology - particularly PS2 would have made SWOS an ideal acquisition for the player manager gaming fraternity and thus the cult would have continued but since a series of half baked sequels has been made and this has failed to do the old game justice and thus the popularity has waned.
The entry of the FIFA series to the market place in particular the 2006 version of the game has filled partially the void left in the market by the SWOS series and the continuing development of the excellent Pro Evolution series means that football fans are now spoiled for choice in their quest for gaming satisfaction. I am however yet to find a game that can satisfy the need to complete an entire football season - in management mode - in less than ten minutes - a quick fix if ever I heard one!
