Speed Racer: The Challenge of Racer X

Game Review (written by Eric) Added on: 01/08/2008
The Speed Racer: The Challenge of Racer X is a game based on the wildly popular animated show of the 60s- Speed Racer. Considering that the anime (Japanese animation) became so huge, it is kind of disappointing that this game didn’t do well commercially. But consumers can not be blamed since this is not the best car racing game ever developed. In fact, it lacks a lot of the elements that make car races an absolute joy to play. This game is boring for the experienced gamer and can most likely provide entertainment for young gamers and those who are looking for easy games to play for breaks.

Accolade was not able to incorporate enough of the driving dynamics such as inertia and others that could affect how you drove the car. This makes the car very easy to drive; not providing good challenges for those who are into this type of genre. Because of the ease by which you can drive the car the game is not as exciting as the TV show. There is not traction and no wind resistance to at least simulate the experience of driving a real car. The game really makes the driving part of the game very easy.
In the game, you play the role of Speed racer who races against Racer X on campaign tracks. There are also other challengers in the

game and they all want to get your superb racing machine the Mach 5. The car has many features that can be activated but they don’t really have much effect on how you play in the game. They are just fancy moves meant to entertain the biggest Speed racer fans.
It is probably a good game for those who do not have too much experience playing racing games or the younger players who want a racing game that they can practice their skills on. There is also very little challenges and variations in the track making this game a bit boring for those who enjoy fast-paced and challenging race car games.
If you are looking for a game to just spend a few hours on then this game is probably worth the time you will consume downloading and playing it. If you are a die-hard fan of the cartoon series, you probably would like this game for the nostalgia that it provides. But if you are looking for game that feels and looks awesome then I say make a pass for this game.
