Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 01/10/2008
Mike Tyson’s Punch Out was really great and pushing my limitations back in the eighties. Cinema ware has done just that with its TV Sports series. Boxing being just one of the titles. This particular game was released in the early nineties and challenges the user to become a successful manager and coach and player.
In TV Sports Boxing, the user is in charge of virtually every aspect of the budding boxers’ careers. The user first begins by building his boxer. Or the user can go about building his boxer. The boxer’s appearance is customizable, from the fighter’s body and hair color, to the design of his trunks and overall fighting style. The user must also allocate a set number of skill points to various attributes, which include the fighter’s stamina, strength, conditioning, punching power and cutting ability. The user also purchases a trainer and an event promoter. These positions will initially be filled by people who are not very good at doing their jobs, but as the fighter takes home several prize purses from bouts, he will be able to hire better trainers and promoters in order to improve his skills and secure better, more challenging matches and more media coverage and more money.
The player actually has to fight as his boxer and earn the prizes himself. The controls are tricky, but once mastered are quite fun. The game requires a high level of reflexes and great hand eye coordination. The motions of the boxers are quite convincing due to the fluid animation and excellent programming.
Overall, TV Sports Boxing is one of the better boxing games from classic PC games due to the fact that it offers something for the action gamer as well as the simulator or strategist. It also features great game play that the fan of sports games will surely appreciate. It is a surprisingly nice game and an excellent download.
