Ultimate Soccer Manager 98-99

PC
Genre:  Sports    |     Year: 1999    |     Publisher: Sierra On-Line, Inc.     |     Developer: Impressions
Game Review (written by Brettblade) Added on: 09/23/2006
Ultimate Soccer Manager 98/99 came free with many Packard Bell PCs of around that era. That's how most people got into the game, me included. The graphics are excellent for the time the game was created, but obviously not a patch on today’s games. The thing that sets USM 98/99 apart though is the absolute playability of it. It's something that just can't be explained, everything about the game feels right. Everything is in the right place, you have many options regarding controlling the club as well.
Plus, you get a huge choice of teams, and a statistic editor to keep your teams up to date with current transfer, or even just to "cheat". There are varied difficulty levels, which change the amount of money that you have at the start of the game. Each team has in-depth parameters about how many fans turn up for games, what they willing to pay for tickets, and how much money they expect merchandise to cost. This is by far the best football management game I have ever played. It does have graphics problems under Windows XP, which virtually renders it unplayable, but I'm hoping that DOSbox (a free download on this site) will sort out this problem. Time will tell, of course.
This game is available on Amazon and the like, but at a ridiculous cost with the game now being so rare. The last time I looked, it was about £35! Having said that, it is probably worth that much. If you've never played it before, I highly recommend that you do. You will soon get addicted though, be warned! Obviously, for many people the XP graphics issue will be a big thing, but I will test it out under different Windows operating systems for you and report back. It currently works for definite on: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE and Windows Millennium Edition (otherwise known as Windows ME). The disk for this game has since been long lost, so I'll download this now and try it on Windows 2000 Pro and on Windows XP with the DOSbox Emulator and see what happens. Fingers crossed, I'll be back on the best, most addictive Football / Soccer management of all time. In my opinion at least, but you can't go wrong trying it, it is a free download after all!

By far the most fun manager game ever. And this is from someone who don't even like football. Fantastic game

Fantastic game by Sierra but unfortunately as everybody said already, football management games have gone downhill from then on. Sure they have better graphics and more nitty gritty detail but they lack the sheer scale of different items you can control on this game. This is the only game I have come across where you can not only build shops outside the ground as well but you can control the pricing with what souvenirs you can sell. The actual football management side of things ain’t too shabby either! I can’t believe I used to have this game but I stupidly lent it to a mate who hence lost it so more fool me :) but £35 just makes it worse! But if you find this game I can safely say, buy it rather than these later models and you will not be disappointed in your choice.

Best football game that I've owned. I used to play it all the time with my brother. Was our first proper game on our first PC and we loved it.

It’s the best management game ever created, it’s amazing to think how far technology has advanced in the last 10 years yet manager games have went backwards from this. Truly the epitome of the manager gaming world.

This is a superb game I’ve had hours of fun playing this, just brilliant. The fact that you can do almost anything you want is excellent, you choose your sponsorship, can put bets on, bungs to other teams, create your own training methods and turn your team into world beaters. Just simply the best.

This is by far the best game in management I’ve ever played, the graphics were brilliant and the best bit was you can actually build and design your own stadium and this compared to championship manager and football manager and this makes usm 98/99 win by a fraction well done to all the makers and I’d like to see another game by sierra brought out

This is a great game. Hours of fun. Advanced for its time. Excellent game play and to be able to get a smaller team to the heights of FA Cup is possible.

This was (did I say "was"? meant "is") the pioneer of soccer manager. Definitely the best football manager game without a doubt. I have had manager games on my Acorn Electron, spectrum, Amiga and PC. Nothing compares to this one.

Without a doubt, the best management game ever made. I have most part of the management games, but none comes close to this one. You have complete control of the finances, team selection, buying and selling players and so on.

Super game. Excellent managerial elements. Today's game lack the strategic and tactical flair that this one offers.

Gary (02/17/2007)
The best game i've ever played. Even the games with brilliant graphics are not a patch on USM.

Ultimate soccer manager 98 is the best game ever invented. I used to play it with my mate. One day he said to me I'v got a free game with my computer, so I just thought oh it's going to be crap. So we started playing it and the music gripped me - I love the music. We played it for hours and hours. For days non stop. We were addicted.
