Rugby is a very fast-paced, action packed and interesting sport that I never really understood until I started to play video games. Back in the day, kids were more likely to play what was available to them often times by trading with their friends to improve their inventories of playable games.
Wembley League Rugby is one of many rugby games that were available for play on all the consoles and finally the PC format. This particular version was developed by Dentons in the middle nineties and was released to the market by Audiogenic Software Limited.
It features a third person, top down perspective and is fully licensed.
Wembley Rugby League uses the same engine as Audiogenic’s other famous rugby release, World Class Rugby. In this installment, the user plays the team in the English Rugby League. The setting of the game is in the United Kingdom, and players basically serve as player coaches throughout the gaming experience. The game presents a nice tandem, since the arcade action on the field is very fun and fast-paced; whereas, the user also has to opportunity to do some thinking by applying some good, realistic coaching strategies. This pairing of two great styles of play makes Wembley Rugby League appropriate for the hardcore sports action gamer, as well as the arm chair coach.
The
biggest difference between the league play of this game and career modes and league play in other games is the way the rules really force some aggressive playing styles. In Wembley Rugby League, a team has to give up possession of the ball after being tackled for the sixth time. This make for some pretty desperate calls and wild maneuvering after the fifth or even fourth tackle. Teams are made of thirteen players instead of fifteen, and there are some minor differences as far as scrums and out-of-bounds plays are concerned. Mainly, though, it is just a good combination game of rugby play and coaching.
Wembley Rugby League is one of those sports games that you just have to try. The game play is easy to master and there is a little something in it for people of all playing styles. It is a sure winner and can still be considered a leader in the world of rugby gaming today. Give it a whirl and see for yourself.
