Game Review (written by Thelynxdj) Added on: 08/20/2007
First there was checkers. Then there was chess. Then with the creation of the 8 bit Nintendo came ARCHON a battle for territories on a siple chess board where skill with a paddle and simple strategy concepts were your ally. After which was realeases Archon ultra. A continuation of the original Epic battle game.
I really liked the better graphics and sound of this newer version, but I enjoyed even more the simplicity of the original NES version. It was very satisfying using a sword pawn guy and being able to take out a golem or maybe even a dragon.

It was very satisfying using a sword pawn guy and being able to take out a golem or maybe even a dragon. Even when you played two player the game mechanics favored the light handed person with very simple controls. The headstones and other obstacles

bobbing up and down were great also making each battle different. But this newer version took some away while trying to just be newer. It felt to me like it did when I played different versions of Sid Meiers Civilzation. There weren't any really newly innovative concepts, and the original still offered the same if not better gameplay. In fact I enjoyed playing the older ones on older machines instead of needing win 98 or xp. It seems that limits in hardware definitely impact the simplicity and playability of certain games.
If you enjoy chess checkers and sitting down to enjoy a Fantasy Novel like Lord O the Rings or the Redwall series. Or if Strategy is what you enjoy like Dune 2 or Warcraft. Then you may enjoy this Journey into a fantasy Chess world which will keep you playing against the computer or with a friend for hours and hours. With several styles of strategy and gameplay using monters or humans with a simple sword to large projectile and spells to create elementals or ressurect fallen allies. This innovative battle game if not forever will be on anyone’s favorite games list for a long time.

Archon was one of the best chess type games back in the day.

Archon on the c=64 was stupendous! this port to the pc took everything that was good about the game and managed to mess it up by trying to 'update' it to modern standards. First, the original was all 2D graphics. for the new wave of 3D, the pc version has an isometric 3D view, which, naturally, makes it hard to see if you're lined up for your shot. mostly the 2 1/2-D view was just eye candy, but they DID try to use some of the 3-dimensionality - for example, the dragon flies above the terrain and can only breathe fire down on an angle. in theory, this leaves a vulnerable spot directly under the dragon where a knight could rush in and kill the beast. in practice. this was not likely. They also tried to give each creature two attacks, or an attack and defense. for example, the phoenix doesn't just burst into flame, it can release a "homing flame feather" that follows the opponent around and hits it for fire damage. the banshee could also release up to three homing skulls that would slow the enemy. the unicorn could fire a horn bolt or leap over obstacles like lava. that sort of thing. Some of the dark creatures were also drastically changed, and made more "realistic," which resulted in the manticore being changed from a zippy little speed demon to a ponderously slow, heavy creature. All of these changes seemed geared to try to spruce up the game, rather than make it more play-balanced or more fun. I really adored the c=64 version, but this pc archon ultra was a big disappointment, and the game lost all of its fun for me.
