Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 11/23/2007
Cavewars was once a revolutionary game of resource management, technological research and military might. Breaking onto the gaming scene in 1997, Avalon Hill introduced it as an excellent turn-based strategy game in the war/fantasy genre that features intelligent and challenging AI. It is a difficult game with a long learning curve to master all of the intricacies of micromanagement.
The setting of the game is, quite obviously, within a cave. Maps of the caves are randomly generated by the computer. The player can choose from eight different sentient races, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. The Gakkars, for example, are violent, strong mass murders. The Bergbui do not need food, for they can consume rocks. The over world of Ibido, the planet which is the setting for Cave wars, is ruled by an evil regime, leaving the eight races to battle for survival in the caves below the surface.
The game can be played by any combination of five AI or human players. Each player chooses the race he or she prefers. Play is turn based, and there is a lot to keep tabs on in this game if the user expects to outwit the more than competent AI. There are three basic types of technology to research: mining, weaponry and transportation. Each has its merits, as exploration, economy and conquest are all important aspects of the game. The weapons system, for example, begins with rudimentary bludgeoning weapons, and advances the stage of modern assault rifles. The magical system consists of four basic categories: transportation, viewing, summoning, and earth magic. These magic’s create forty-eight spells ranging from mapping to creating earthquakes.
The most unique thing about Cavewars is probably the layout of its maps. The caves have generally a five-level underground. Each level displays independent action. While life might be calm on level three, a complete chaotic mess might be the case on level five. The fastest way between these points is often a drilled hole straight down. Through this feature, an added element of dimension is added to Cavewars.
Overall, this is a good micromanager with great replay ability and awesome AI. The graphics are good and colorful. The game play is challenging and entertaining, making it well worth downloading.

Jessicafreitag (02/14/2007) This game is awesome. I like how old school it is! The graphics are kind of funny, and I wish there were more levels. |
