Celtic Tales: Balor of Evil Eyebased based on the annals of ancient history. In this campaign, move away from the war-riddled Far East and instead join the quest to unify the island of Eire. To do this, the gamer must choose between varieties of medieval style heroes, ranging from the druid to the classic knight. By assigning tasks to train the heroes, the gamer can customize and specialize the characters and build them into savvy and powerful warlords, capable of capturing and holding all of Ireland.
As with many of KOEI’s games, micromanagement must succeed in this campaign.
Similar to Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Nobunaga’s Ambition or Uncharted Waters, KOEI requires the gamer to pay close attention to detail and control many facets of the
game. Within a year consisting of thirteen months, the hero must build his cultural level to increase charm and happiness, manage resources such as wood, grain and metals, and successfully trade with other cultures. All of these things will lead to more wealth for the campaign and a more powerful and charismatic leader whom the people will be more inclined to follow and the enemy will be more apt to fear.
Within the actual battles, once enemies have been concretely formed, there are many ways to proceed in battle. Heroes may request one-on-one challenges, or duels, to determine strength. Standard battles are obviously an option and magic is also available to sway the tide of a skirmish. There are forty provinces to conquer to succeed in establishing command of Eire, and with the complexity of the game, a single hero may be quite elderly before accomplishing just half of this monumental task.
The user interface is also classic KOEI complex where necessary, but very negotiable. The hero’s province is always in view and the season is indicated to better remind the gamer of the necessities required for winter, the harvest and planting. There is a menu on the right hand portion of the screen that displays all possible actions in a convenient list. There are many cut screens for the multitude of heroes that visit the province for the purpose of trade or war. The gamer is also able to access a “councilor” which provides a very nice tutorial and definition of the keyboard layout.
Overall, it is an excellent game for its time and is complete with everything an RPG gamer could want, from swords to runes. Its customizable nature ensures that it is very repayable and will offer more than just a single conquest before a gamer will grow tired of this unique adventure. This game is the best! You need downloading it!!! You’ll be successed in it!
