Game Review 1 (written by Alstar70) Added on: 01/30/2007
Civilization was the beginning of turn based strategy. All that went before is now scattered into oblivion such was the impact of Sid Meirs game Civilization. The basic idea was copied from the boardgame, however the PC Game did what the board game did not - become a raging success.

Much of the credit of this success goes to the fact Sid was willing to go out and create a whole new field (something he has done time and time again - I mean who really what think a game building a train simulator would take off).
Much of the success of the game was that it was SO addictive. I started playing it in the early 90's and it was SO addictive that I spent my first of many nights staying up the entire night. You would start playing and then notice the sun is coming up! Check the clock and say what 5am already?

Why this was so is difficult to explain, but I put it down to the fact that the game give you tasks throughout the whole span of time. The continual improvement of military units, individual cities and the time to conquer other empires. Starting with the spearman units follow the course of history, being able to later produce archers, horses, elephants, tanks,

airplanes, etc. Likewise cities improvements - granary, walls, barracks and more. The fight over resources is what made the game interesting - build improvements will later pay off, or build more units for protection or conquest. The problem being if you didn't build enough improvements you would be technologically defeated by other powers. Improvement such as the pyramids, great wall, apollo program, seti and others made another interesting decision - did you massively invest resources only to have someone else beat you to it!

It was this power over decisions which made the game not only addictive but also replayable. The ability to choose different civilization with different advantages made one have to try winning with them all - China, Russia, England, India and more. The ability to play diplomat was interesting if basic in the first incarnation.

Whilst by todays standards the graphics and sound are basic, the basic gameplay was so good that it has meant their have been 4 direct sequels as well as numerous copy cat programs.

My rating MEGA-CLASSIC

Game Review 2 (written by Kirbybuddy) Added on: 07/19/2006
Wow, what great memories come to mind when I see the name Sid Meier. Hundreds of hours of my life have been spent (wasted?) on Sid Meier games. Whether it was swash-buckling pirates (though I’ve never buckled a swash, I swear!), hostile take-over in Railroad Tycoon, or reaching for Alpha Centauri in Civilization, the Sid Meier games had a way of absorbing you.
The story behind Civilization is simple: you are the supreme ruler of a small group of people and your goal is to build a Civilization over a period of 6000 years (game time of course). You start out small with only a couple of “abilities, i.e., the building of roads, irrigation, etc. You must found a village, and through time build cities, gain technology, and manage your realm. The game is a combination of exploration, advancement, and city management. You in charge of everything from the growth rate of cities, to the tax rate, to the rate of technological advancement, to the development and use of the military.
The game can be played with one of two goals in mind: military conquest of all other civilizations or the building of a spaceship to colonize Alpha Centauri. The game begins in 4000 BC, and although you can play longer, it officially ends at 2000 AD. The game preceded RTS games, so it plays in turns. Within your turn you have the ability to control all of your units and make your plans.
When I first played Civilization I thought I would be bogged down by its complexity. This was the first game of its type that I tried. I found it to be quite simple and great fun. I was never much of one for rushing to space. I always enjoyed becoming a Communist nation as quickly as possible and then conquering the world. How you play is up to you.
The massive amount of customization that is part of the game allows for great replay value. You can play on earth or customize the world, complete with the amount of resources, type of atmosphere (arid, lush, etc.), size of world, number of civilizations, etc. And of course there are 5 skill levels which increase the difficulty of the computer. The only downfall is the lack of multiplayer. (Although Microprose did release a CivNET version of Civilization that could be played on the internet or via modem.
The granddaddy of all civilization management games, well worth the time you put into it.

Number 1 game of all time. The best ever. Never equalled. Until you play this game you'll only have been wasting your time with second rate stuff. Got it? Good. :-)

The satisfaction of nuking another nation, the rush of adrenalin when you make your first tank to bombard a city, making political alliances. This game can give you all this.

One of the best strategy games ever made. Replay value is top notch and demographical target is all around. Strategy games today have all evolved from this Sid Meier classic.
