For fans of the newest Civilization games that are also into the classics, you're going to love CivNet. Basically this is just an older version of the Civilization games which was the first to have the added on network capability. However, the networking aspect of the game is not necessary to enjoy it. You can simply play in single player mode.

The aim of the game is essentially to create human society. You, being thousands of years in the past, have to build cities to form your own country. Within the cities you establish you have the option of constructing various components to them to help them grow and prosper. The game is not all like this though. You also have the
chance to create armies and your governing tactics in order to take over more and more of the world around you. While you do this you will also have opposing computer or human (if you play network) players building their own countries. Winning the game can be done either through military conquest or political and diplomatic strategies. As the game and your countries move on through thousands of years, you become more technologically advanced and can obviously build more complex stuff. Likewise, while you begin learning how to make the wheel you eventually learn more advanced things, like how to build the atomic bomb or how to turn your country into a communist state.
The graphics are not much to talk about. They are not bad according to the year the game was created. Just simple graphics from an overhead view of the world you control.
This is not an easy game at all. It does take a degree of intelligence, even if you only wish to build massive armies and destroy the other civilizations. You will need to use your brain a fair bit and form solid, sound strategies. However, with that being said, if you're not the sharpest tool in the shed then don't get too depressed. You can easily get better at the game after failing it a few times.
So, all in all, CivNet is a great version of the classic Civilization line of strategy games which includes a fun network gameplay mode which is not entirely necessary to enjoy the game. The game gives you the chance to fix the errors of the past and build a utopian society or to become the greatest monster in history and rule the world like a true dictator.
