Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 12/04/2007
Clash of Steel is a real time strategy based around the historical time frame of European World War II in the years 1939 to 1945. It was released in 1993 by the strategic power house, Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI), and features classic SSI detail and scale. It could be compared to an epic Panzer General.
Within Clash of Steel, the user can choose to play from the point of view of one of three WWII superpowers: Germany (Axis), the Allies, or the Soviet Union.
The game offers a fair balance of war strategy and tactical combat. As the leader of the selected power, the user is in charge of all ground, air and naval attacks, as well as defenses. The goal is to use these forces and a great strategic brain to capture all of Europe and North Africa before January of 1946 in order to win the war or eliminate all of the outside threats from the opposing faction.
The most important aspect of Clash of Steel is strategy. You must create groups of military units that compliment one another, position them for appropriate attack, defense and supply, and then control them during combat. You control the convoys and the reconnaissance missions. You must also research new military technologies as well as build up your fleets and squadrons. Research is a huge key in increasing the power of military units and the payloads they can expect to obtain. There are many special weapons that can be obtained through research, and most are historically accurate.
There are also several components of micromanagement involved in Clash of Steel. Diplomacy can sway a battle for or against you. Neutral countries can be persuaded to join a battle or help defend an area.
The mapping used in the game is not only huge, but historically accurate as well, and it features even the smallest countries affected by this war. The graphics are great and colorful and the game play is superb. If it lacks anything, the naval and air battles could be considered a little clunky, but not so much as to detract from the game’s overall value. The sound effects are also great and the option of playing a two-player game via the hot seat is excellent, challenging fun. Clash of Steel is the pure strategist’s dream.
If you want pass your spare time with pleasure and fun you need downloading this wonderful game! You’ll be excited and satisfied!
