When I first started playing Colonization it was a long time ago. Way back on my 1998 Compaq. To this day I am still amazed that that Compaq has lasted 8 years and is still going strong. The graphics weren't to demanding on the onboard graphics port. I think that this is one of the best games that were ever developed by Sid Meier.
I liked the strategy of the game as you recreate a revolutionary war against the tyranny of the ruling world across the pond.

I liked the strategy of the game as you recreate a revolutionary war against the tyranny of the ruling world across the pond. Although, when I was a kid playing this game I looked at it from a whole other perspective than I do now. Instead of thinking about the social issues that came with a revolution like taxes
and other things of such nature. I looked at them as oppression and not paying our part of protective services. All I thought of when I was playing is kill those commie bastards who want to cut into the profits "I" could be making.
Another thing that I liked about the game is how simple it is to play. Of course when I was younger I never got past the easy mode, I think it was called Viceroy... or maybe that was the hard level... I don't know. Anyway, you control citizens of your colonies to create an empire that could defend and ultimately defeat the mother country from which you descended. It seems like biting the hand that feeds, but that's a whole other issue.
The graphics were simple, like any other game of its era. But sometimes simple is better than advanced graphics. I mean look at Doom I and Doom III. I would take Doom I over Doom III any day of the week. The simple graphics of the game colonization though make it a lot easier to keep track of all your minions on the battle field and helped you to maneuver your men into positions to outflank the bastards that oppress you.
All in all I think this game is a lot of fun to play and I also think that it is the best game Sid Meier came out with in that era. This game was invented in the computer boom when everything was low tech and the processor speeds didn't reach more than one gigahertz. If you're looking for something that's going to wow you with graphics look somewhere else. But if you're looking for something that's going to take you back in time to when computer games were wholesome and simply fun than pick this one.
