Command HG has got to be one of the best games of yesterday that is still available today. It is a military strategy game that has a lot of different available units to choose from, making for a great tactical challenge in a multitude of terrains. The game is divided into sections or squares, and the movement points are calculated by these squares. The squares also determine possession and battles.
The importance of this is that if enemy land units overlap by two or more of these squares they are considered to be in combat.
This allows for positioning of units so as to concentrate firepower on a single enemy unit. This makes for a much more different play than many games where you simply move up to an enemy and start firing at the closest unit. Furthermore, having units attacking a unit on opposite sides causes additional damage and can basically considered a tactical pincer attack. Infantry units become mired in this combat, and so leads to long-term battles. Tanks can still maneuver, which serves to greatly differentiate them from infantry in a way other than just stats can do.
Naval units are similar, but some of them have longer range, and none of them become mired in combat; positioning isn't quite as big of a deal.

World War II, III, and IV scenarios are not nearly as interesting or balanced as the random scenario where each side starts with only a single city. In the WWII scenario everything hinges on Russia; whichever side you play, fly your air force into that theatre, and spend all your money there. You can virtually ignore the rest of the map, and as long as you win in Russia you win the whole war. Instead of a grand strategy campaign that mirrors the real war, it is just one big battle. My problem with the WW3 scenario is that about 2/3 of the world's oil appears in single slice of the map stretching from the Middle East through the Caucasus. Balance-wise, this turns it into a similar situation with the WW2 scenario; other than basic defense, you can ignore the rest of the world because whoever controls this one area ends up winning the game. Bad balance, and bad realism; people only focus on Middle Eastern oil because they export a huge amount; the West pumps a huge amount as well, but it gets used up domestically and so is never really a news item.
All in all it’s wonderful game with great graphics and interesting storyline! I highly recommend downloading it immediately, it’s worth it! There are some drawbacks to the scenarios, but they are still fun, and the random missions make up for it fully. You’ll be satisfied, I’m sure!
