Game Review (written by Thomasp168) Added on: 12/23/2007
This game was really a benchmark in combat flight sims. The premise was unique: you’re in command of a British Lancaster heavy bomber assigned one of the most dangerous missions of the war. The mission involves flying over enemy territory, being attacked by enemy fighters, barrage balloons and anti aircraft fire. You can jump from position to position to take on different roles (pilot, engineer, gunner bombardier) as the mission progresses and new emergencies arise. When you finally reach the target, you have to be at a specific altitude and by using 2 lights, the bombardier lines up on the target. He then releases at precisely the right moment. Hit, you’re a hero, miss, and you’ve wasted a plane ride.
The graphics were excellent for C64 standards, from what I remember, the sound was good too. Game play was exceptional. You had a lot of control over the plane, not just a stick and throttles. The plane takes damage realistically, you can lose engines, catch fire, etc, and you have to deal with each of em.
The gunner positions, front and rear, are a blast. You attack barrage balloons from the nose guns to avoid colliding with em. The tail gun is used to defend against attacking fighters. You can also shoot out searchlights. Points are given for each of these kills. Getting caught in a searchlight is an experience. Time seems to stand still as your plane is suddenly blasted by ack ack. The searchlights are definitely a priority.
The bomb run is very difficult. Again, you deal with guns as you approach. You have to hit the target altitude and speed, start the bomb rotating in the bomb bay, and release it precisely the right moment. Each one is more difficult than the last, but the interest includes in it!
This game was a blast, and will keep you engaged for hours.
A joystick is definitely required, and there will be keyboard commands to master as well. If you can set up a mouse, it may make things other than flying easier. I’d love to see an updated PC version of this game. You’ll be satisfied and addicted for hours or even days!
