Game Review (written by Yellowbelly) Added on: 06/03/2007
Decisive Battles of the Civil War is certainly an older game. It relies souly on the keyboard, and all units are just blocks. What are the goods and the bads?
Good:
The ability to change how your general thinks and acts is very intriguing. It allows the person to hange a slow character, like McClellan, into an overly aggressive barbarian. It makes history interesting to think of the possibilities. You win by having more points at the end of the battle then your opponent does.
However, it is not as easy as it sounds. Even if you destroy more units then the other side did, the enemy could still win if the hold all command points they started out with. Ability to move your headquarters. Although you might think you are the best warrior, the computer thinks its better then you. There will be times when the enemy gets so close to you, that it is nessecary to leave. This game allows you that option, and you still can command your troops effectively. Ability to make your own battles. I loved making my own battles. I could choose where the battle was, like Boogerland or something of the sort.
YOUR UNITS DON'T ROUT! Have you ever played a good old war-game, and are about to break the enemy lines, when suddenly, your men go into rout and run away? Have no fear. This game does not do this. You order your men to retreat, no one else.
Bad:
The fighting is historically correct, which ends up with the command of your armies being in flanks. Unless you are in that flank, you cannot choose soldiers to fight. This makes it hard, especially since sometimes it won't allow you access to your men. That's when you are likely to lose battles, because the enemy will chew you up and spit your men back out.
Inability to click on troops in flanks. Sometimes, when you can get access to your flank or centre, your not allowed to command the troops in that area either. This makes it tedious, since you usually need to command all your troops. Sometimes, this alone has denied me victory that should have been mine.
Overall, if you like wargames and are willing to try anything, this is a game for you. However, if you like having complete control, and like using your mouse, don't download it.
