I remember buying Dime City back in 1995; the box contained the usual CD-Rom, the usual manual, and a not-so-usual Luger 9mm bullet. And it got only better after installing it.
In this Cyberdyne (the same company that brought us Mad-TV) manager game you take your shot at becoming the biggest gangster in the city, and the means to get there are many. From extortion to robberies, prostitution, trading all kinds of goods – ranging from guns to real estate (after giving the owner a good beating he’s guaranteed to give you a special discount) and stolen goods like jewelry and even slaves – stealing, and so forth.

In order to build your empire properly you of course have to grease the wheels
of the public machinery by bribing the police, the IRS and not to forget the public, as becoming the major of the city will cost you heavily in terms of charity and press bribes. And if trying to be the Don wasn’t enough to do, there’s of course you’re more than attractive secretary, which you’ll have to seduce properly.
You basically start out by recruiting thugs from different fields, gangsters, pimps, prostitutes, drivers, etc. that all have their own specialty. After that, you simply get them a car, choose a target and the crime of choice on the city map and off they go. Next morning they’ll report back to you, and if successful, bring back money or stolen goods. The success of the mission can not be directly influenced, but when it comes to taking over and being attacked by one of the other 3 crime syndicates in the city, you’re being offered with the option to jump right into the action with your employees and duke it out with the rival organization.
This all happens in a very comic strip kind of way so nothing’s being taken too seriously here, but in the end you’ll spend hours laughing away and hoping that your next cunning project will be a success. Not too mention to see more of the secretary, who peels off her clothes layer by layer the better you treat her.
Dime City might have been overlooked in it’s time, but it’s still an absolute classic. I would give a 9 out of 10 (keeping in mind that it’s 12 years old of course) and definitely recommend you to give it a try if you’re into manager games and/or liked The Godfather.
