Game Review 1 (written by Norb) Added on: 10/13/2006
This game is an excellent adaptation of what might happen after the first book....you build off of a central construction base and you can build things like spice refineries and barracks and things like that.
It is still an excellent game to play over and over again. And one of the best parts is that you can also play as the harkonens and some other house that I haven't played yet but it is still cool.
The main objective is to gather credits which you do by gathering spice using the harvester and carry-alls and the spice is directly converted into credits.
But the challenge is in defending your spice operation from the other houses that will attack your harvesters and your buildings making it more difficult to gather spice which means if you only focus on the harvesting then you will not make it past the first level. So you will need to build barracks and vehicle bases so that you will have a defending force to fend off the opposing houses. This all takes place on arrakis but the one thing that is missing from this world is the capital city of arrakeen which I think would made a cool map for the game.
There is a world map with "territories" and each map is one of these territories and

as you enter each one you need to meet a spice quota to continue but once you get past the first two maps you can only invade other territories of the other houses which makes it a little more difficult and once the houses start losing territories they seem to get a little stronger. I don't really understand that part other then that it adds challenge.
Anyways this is an excellent game and I highly recommend it for anyone that enjoyed the novels or any one that like real time strategies and if you have not read at least the first book then you really need too. So download it and play and love it because that is all that matters. Once you play it you will understand that this game is one of the best real time strategies of this or any other generation except of course for starcraft, warcraft and civilizations. But still good enough that you should download it for free. Because that does not cost anything at all so get it.

Game Review 2 (written by Flib) Added on: 10/06/2006
The oldest Real-Time strategy fans know there were a few must-have games growing up. Dune II was one of these. Taking control of one of the three interstellar houses, you would begin your conquest of that long fought over planet of Arakis. The planet would not come easily, though. You must first gather enough spice to appease Emperor Frederick IV, who has also allowed two other great houses to compete. Depending on which side you chose, the noble house Atreides, the insidious house Ordos, or the evil house Harkonnen, you would compete with the other two for the planet.
Game-play is simple. After each mission, you are presented with the world map which is divided into several territories. From here, you select which one you would like to invade, with the eventual goal of conquering the entire map. Each territory will pit you against your enemies in a bloody battle to the end. You must first construct a base, and then build an army with which to vanquish your foe. To do this, though, you must harvest spice with harvesters. But be warned, even the sands of the planet itself will conspire against you. Great sandworms will arise from the ground and swallow even a massive harvester whole if you are not careful to watch for 'Worm Sign' and evacuate the area with your carryalls.
Combat itself is simple, with the three houses having standardised technology with a few differences, and each house had a special unit. The Atreides have the powerful sonic tank, which has a wide range but the drawback of possibly damaging friendly units. The Harkonnen have the Devastator tank, which is amazingly powerful, and can self-destruct in a nuclear fireball. And finally, the Ordos have the Deviator, possibly one of the most fun units in the game, as its attack can cause enemy units to fight for you!
Dune 2 pioneered many elements we take for granted in games today, including fog of war, resource collection, tech trees and Meta maps. Between your colorful men tats, the driving force of the plot, and the sheer exhilaration of fighting for Dune in one of the most influential games of all time, it's difficult to set the mouse down and take a break. If you choose only one game to grab, make it this one.

Dune 2 is a great timekiller. Whenever I have spare time, I go back to Dune. It's great, and reminds me of Command and Conquer. If you like that, you will like Dune. One of the greatest strategy games.

Possibly the first RTS as we know them today. At the time of it's release, it had some of the best sound & speech on the market which holds up to even todays standards. If your an RTS fan, you owe it to your self to play the game that inspired greats Warcraft and Command & Conquer.
