Gettysburg: Turning Point by Strategic Simulations, Inc. is a unique tactical strategy game that came out in 1986. It is based on the famous battle in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania from July 1 to July 3, 1863 which is considered one of the most famous and arguably the most decisive battle in the history of the Civil War.
The game depicts the entire three day battle and you can choose to play the whole three days or just one particular day of the battle. When you play at half brigade level, you can have a lot of fun. You can play this game in either single or two player modes. You can also choose if you want to fight as a confederate army or the union army, which is great because of where some people stand on the battle. The winner is chosen by how many territories and casualties you have, just as it does in the real world wars.
The map in the game is set up in a way that is really easy to read. It is divided up in to 200 yard squares on a 36 by 52 grid and depicts how Gettysburg looked back then. The grids are well designed with roads, hills, streams and trees that will affect your movement and game play. A single unit takes up one square. The historical accuracy of the brigades is also amazing because in terms of manpower, combat effectiveness, and the divisional and corps leadership as well. All of the combat units arrive at the same locations and times that they did in the actual war. The game is based on each player taking turns (like in chess) and then the combat results are then calculated based on the move that each player has made. Even though it is a turn based game, there are about twelve actual steps to each turn. All the units are kind of restricted by their operational points, but you can still always figure out which move is the best one to make. The operation points are also needed for other things that your troops will suffer from like fatigue and casualties and when you have that happen, it will then in turn affect your troop’s morale. You always want to keep their morale high because they will fight harder and better.
As with almost any other game, this game has levels and difficulties that you can work through. Since each player gets about 42 turns or so total, it makes you really think about how you want to handle everything. This game is a thinking game where you have to put logic and strategic skills to use. It’s too challenging and interesting to play! I highly recommend downloading it immediately!
