Global Conquest

Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 01/04/2008
Ozark Softscape developed the video game Global Conquest especially for the Windows format, and Microplay Software released it in the early nineties. It is very reminiscent of the classic board game (and later video game) Risk. It is basically a top-down perspective combat strategy game.
Global Conquest is a turn-based strategy game and it is often considered the sequel to Command HQ. It is geared for up to four human players, who take turns managing resources and issuing orders to their troops in a tactical and management turns.
Players must build, train and maneuver their troops in an effort to defend the territories they hold, and eventually become strong enough to expand their empire outwards. The goal is to use these units, ranging from massive infantry battalions to nuclear missiles, to take over the world.
Aside from the many different units available for the gamers’ use, there are many constructible buildings, including: barracks, bunkers, factories, a capitol building, and nuclear silos. All buildings serve a specific purpose or add capabilities to the user’s army. Similar to the Civilization series, many buildings are necessary to achieve certain upgrades, ranging from better, more accurate missiles to a stronger economy. All upgrades, buildings and units cost money. Additionally, money can be used for diplomatic ventures, and for initiatives such as propaganda campaigns against the enemy. While resources are very useful and can help propel the game forward, the greatest emphasis is on using the armies to conquer cities. More money and resources are gained from this action than by anything else the user will accomplish in the game. There are forty two territories to conquer, so the game can play out for some time.
Although dated by today’s standards, Global Conquest featured superior graphics. The game play was good and interesting. While the play of the game featured much more micromanagement and was significantly more advanced than the likes of Risk, the learning curve of Global Conquest was very short, and it was very easy to learn. This made it an excellent choice for the casual gamer or the “beer and pretzels” war game fanatic.
In summary, Global Conquest is a good, light weight war strategy game. It will provide an adequate challenge for most experienced gamers. It is recommended for download. You won’t be disappointed!

It's been a long time since I've played the game, but it sure is a classic. It was a great game back then and I look forward to playing it again.
