The Grandest Fleet is a turn-based strategy game for DOS. The Game consisted of 2 sides in a war to control cities and destroy the other teams’ fleet. The first couple menus allow the player to control what type of map was used as well as how many cities and build points each team would have at the beginning of the game. Once all the options were selected it is finally time to start the game. You can choose 1-4 cities at the start and use your build points to build your initial fleet.
The other side would do the same and then the fun would really begin. On the surface, you might think that the best way to win this game is to just build up a huge fleet and take them from city to city and destroy the other team’s cities. But in practice this strategy rarely works. The key to this game is to capture as many of the cities as early in the game as possible. This is key because each city you own gives you more build points to build more ships. So, what is the best way of getting cities you may ask?
The two easiest ways of capturing cities are transports and bribery. If you sail a transport into a neutral city and the cities population is 13 or less the city will be on your side on the next turn. This method works well on cities that are nearby your starting cities. But to get the cities a little farther away from you, you may need to bribe the city to join your side. All the cities on the map are divided into “countries”.
Once you own a city in a country, you can use your build points to bribe the other cities in that country. The real strategy in the game comes from the ship to ship battles. Battleships are big and take a long time to destroy but can only shoot once per turn and can’t shoot subs. Aircraft carriers are good in the fact that they can send two plans to shoot per turn but are easier to destroy than battleships. Cruisers are a good hybrid ship because they are easier to destroy than battleships but can shoot subs.
Destroyers are great at taking out subs but are easily destroyed but other ships. Submarines also have their advantages. They can easily take out battleships as mentioned before and they are hard to detect when submerged, however, once detected can easily be destroyed by aircraft carriers or destroyers.
