Game Review (written by Qballer) Added on: 08/23/2006
Jagged Alliance is a classic turn based game where you are asked to take back an island called Metavira by force. The island has been taken over by a group of ruthless men led by the enemy Lucas Santino who looks to take valuable tree sap on the island for himself. You have a certain amount of money (which is dependant on which difficulty level you select) and you can use that money to hire mercenaries from A.I.M., a fictitious group of mercenaries for hire. Here you can browse through the bios of over 60 mercenaries, each with different personalities, voices, abilities, and with their own relations between them.
Game-play has many different aspects to it. There is an economic strategy you need to have so you can still pay your mercs and guards at the end of the day. You make money by taking back tree sap and selling it. The game itself is real time until you enter a sector with enemies. Then all of your mercs receive a number of action points based on their agility rating. These points are used to walk, swim, shoot enemies, pick locks, open crates, or anything else you may have to do to take down the enemy. When the enemies are gone, the game returns to real time.
A good number of storylines allows for replay-ability, because in one game you may not encounter all side missions. The depth of this game is mind boggling as you can combine items to make make-shift weapons and gear to help you on your quest. There are also playable guides in the game that give you a little side note to each sector you visit, which is a nice touch.
I would highly recommend this game to all fans of strategy games or war games or just gun enthusiasts in general. Also try out Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games, a stand alone add on to this game as well as Jagged Alliance 2 and its stand alone adds on, Jagged Alliance 2: Unfinished Business. Currently, there are plans on releasing a new updated 3-D version of the Jagged Alliance series of games published by Strategy First.
