Game Review 1 (written by Huskypantseh) Added on: 08/27/2006
It’s probably one of the best games I've ever played. I was never a big fan of computer games, but when my friend let me play lords of magic at his house, I had to get it. Way better than Starcraft or Warcraft. It lets you choose a variety of different types of magic, instead of the standard four elements, which makes it exciting and new.
It also combines a turn based game-play, with real time battles, so everybody wins.

Way better than Starcraft or Warcraft. It lets you choose a variety of different types of magic, instead of the standard four elements, which makes it exciting and new.
It also combines a turn based game-play, with real time battles, so everybody wins. You can choose to be a thief who has the ability to steal and capture people, a warrior who has the most hit-points and strength, or a mage who can cast spells. The point of the game is to defeat the death lord,

who starts off ten times more powerful than you or anyone else. You can do this by increasing your military power, or taking over other lands. To take over a land you can either free their great temple and they will follow you. Or you could forcefully destroy their stronghold.
The second one is usually easier, as you do not have to have them liking you first, but you will not get their armies, only their buildings. The game starts off seeming pretty easy, you take a few armies over, and BAM, and you win. No. You take a few armies over, get ready for your attack, and BAM, someone takes one of your armies over. Most people forget that other armies can attack and take over as well. Your only choice is to try to take over all the armies as quickly as possible, so they can't get to you first, but even then marauding parties, who answer to no lord, can still attack.
You can earn fame, ale, and crystals which all help you on your way. Trading with other armies is also very important. A nice trade will increase your standing with another army, and make it easier for you to take over or trade with them later. A bad trade will make them dislike you, and cause them to attack or take over you. Most people say "why not just make friends with all armies, and then all you have to worry about is the marauding parties and the death lord." This may seem like the case, but as your standing with one army goes up, your standing with another army of the opposite element will go down.
So as your standing with fire goes up, it will go down with fire, etc.

Game Review 2 (written by Donkmue) Added on: 08/13/2006
Lords of Magic is a decent game, wait, not decent, excellent. When I first played it, I was hooked; the only thing that got me off the hook is when I lost it. Probably the best part of the game is that it is not totally linear, yes you can do the main campaign, but you can also do the mini-quests that the game also comes with. This makes the whole game different than just a one-shot. It also allows you to play the game with different aspects, like your hero could be a warrior, rouge, or a wizard. Also there are further denominations such as air, fire, earth there are eight of these, called aspects. The options in it are quite wide too; such as if you are rouge, you can capture opposing units and interrogate them, kill them, or let them go. Since I have not played this game in a long while, I do not remember everything. But I do know that this game is well worth getting even though it is rare. The graphics aren't state of the art, but the game is old. The graphics also weren't eyesores. I personally liked them because it didn't seem like the makers created the game just to make to look good, but they made it to have depth and re-play value. The simplicity of this game also makes new people play it without losing interest. But the over-all depth of the game makes people want to play it again. A game series that is similar to this is "Heroes of Might and Magic." That game, unlike this one downplays the part of the heroes, such as in combat the heroes have a sideline job and uses hex sheets that you move around with for combat. In Lords of Magic, you can actually control the hero during combat. I love this game because I don't get bored of it. There are so many side-quests that before I lost it, I still couldn't finish half of them. This game has so much depth I could drown in it... no, not really, but it is amazing. Going back to the artwork, I said it wasn't state of the art. It looks like it was drawn by a master, and there is attention to every detail. The map editor is also interesting; you can do nearly anything with it, change the whole game. This makes it enjoyable in another way, make a challenge and try to beat it. Overall, this game is long, an epic, with many ways of playing it, and you can even change the way you play it. I would definitely recommend this game.

This game is excellent even with the few bugs present. A few times in my experience I have had to load a saved game to work around a movement problem or crash but these can be fixed by patches anyway. The story is rich and the variety available is immense. Not to mention that the world is enormous and the quests available are numerous. I would love to see this game re-finished with better graphics!

This was one of the first games I had for my computer. It’s an amazing game. The diversity between factions is amazing and the interface is easy to use.
