M.A.X. is a space game that has one basic goal and that is to expand the borders of your system by exploring and colonizing new satellites, planets and asteroids. Most of the bodies within your system are rich in valuable natural resources and will be drawing the attention of other civilizations,
which will create conflict, as well as a race for colonization and control. The user will have to expand his area of ownership, making certain that he is not spread too thin to defend what he has already conquered.
As mentioned above, M.A.X. is a unique and versatile game. The user has a choice of two distinctly different playing styles that will drastically alter the strategies the user will have to employ in order to be successful at the game. The first way the game can be played is as a mainly traditional strategy game, featuring a turn-based playing style. The turns will be untimed, and all opposing forces will have a chance to make moves and conduct business. However, the game can also be played as a real time strategy, which makes for a much more pressured paced and forces the user to think quickly on his feet while acting. Both styles of play are fun and valid, but very different. The user can tailor the game to his own tastes.
The game is further customizable in that the user can choose to have timed turns, and choose the length of each turn. He can select from eight different factions from which to play, and can also play in a full career campaign mode or select a single quick mission for shorter, yet satisfying plays. M.A.X. features a very well done tutorial that can acquaint the user with all of these features and options.
M.A.X. is a great, versatile exploration and conquer style of game that allows the user to show off his resource management skills, as well as some combat strategy. It is a fun space game, and its high level of customization will make it perfect for most any user’s tastes. This is a satisfying play, and a very unique must-have game.
