Simply one of the best games produced during the "Golden Era" of Microprose. Ranking right up there with "X-com" and "Master of Orion," this game is a very fun and expansive adventure in a world of Magic with both a light side and a dark side. The power of several varieties of magic is at your fingertips. Choose to be a benevolent healer who bolsters his towns by casting beneficial spells, a shaman who wields the power of nature and the elements, or a black hearted necromancer who crushes his enemies only to swipe them from the jaws of death and raise them as his undead slaves.

The choice of races to be the leader of also makes this game a very diverse
experienced. What if Merlin were the magical leader of a tribe of barbarians or lizard men? The answer is but a game away. Are your units not enough to conquer your enemies or the monsters your opponents have summoned? No problem, hire a hero and equip him with mighty artifacts so that he can crush even the most savage of beasts. Also you can choose how you want to win the game. Are you content to destroy every race that stands against you or do you hold out until you can cast the Spell of Mastery which grants you ultimate control of magic in the world? It’s all in your hands, but you should remember, you aren't the only wizard in the world and even the most powerful army can be crushed by a single spell, so be warned that magic is not yours alone to control, at least not yet.
Once you've got the basic game mechanics behind you, you can create your own wizard or continue using one of the pre-made wizards inspired from legends that appear throughout human history. A truly excellent choice for anyone interested in a turn based strategy game with enough combat action to keep you hooked. Equal parts action, strategy and economic expansion make this game a great choice for anyone looking for a game to give them a full mental workout. No two games are alike and the creatures you can encounter and summon are also fantastic. I first played this when it came out and I was hooked. I was disappointed that Microprose didn't bother making a second in this series, but I suppose that going broke can really put a damper on ones ability to produce games.
