Game Review (written by Scoops) Added on: 09/06/2006
Mille Bornes is an outstanding card game that I was introduced to in the 1980s by my parents and siblings. As the comment notes, it is a fairly easy game to understand, but like poker or bridge (more so poker in my opinion) takes years to master.
The mechanics of the game are simple: the first player/team to score 5,000 points over the course of one or more hands of cards wins the match. Each round of cards is ideally played to 1000 milestones (English translation of Mille Bornes). No one can get to 1000 in a round until one player/team reaches 700 exactly AND calls for “extension.” I frequently stop a round at 700 when I do not have the distance cards to reach 1,000 and am vulnerable to hazards so long as my opponents do not have enough points to reach 5000.
The cards may be divided into four or five categories: Distance Cards, Hazard Cards, Remedy Cards, Safety Cards, and Roll cards. I place the Roll/Green Light card in a separate category from the Remedy cards although it does function as one because it is the only card that you cannot start accumulating points without first playing.
The Distance cards are divided into 200, 100, 75, 50, and 25 points. Keep in mind that you need to score exactly 700 to call for extension and exactly 1000 to win the race. (NB once someone calls extension, no other player has to reach exactly 700).
The Hazard cards are Stop/Red Light, Speed Limit, Flat Tire, Accident, and Out of Gas. The Remedy Cards that “repair” the corresponding hazard are Roll/Green Light, End-of-Limit, Spare Tire, Repairs, and Gasoline. The importance of the Roll/Green Light is evident when you realize that even if you have a remedy to play on the hazard, you still cannot place distance cards until you get the Roll/Green Light.
There are also Safety Cards that instantaneously remove a hazard and/or confer immunity to the respective hazards. The Four Safety Cards are Right-of-Way/Fire Truck, Puncture Proof, Driving Ace, and Extra Tank. These cards can be played in two ways (with a big point bonus for the second manner): as a “Safety” which you would declare at anytime other than when someone plays the corresponding hazard on you. Played this way the card earns you 100 point for the round and prevents the respective hazard card(s) from being played on you. Alternatively, you hold the card until someone plays the corresponding hazard card to which (in person) you yell “coup foure”, discarding the hazard and gaining future immunity. Played this way, the card earns you 400 points. One final note regarding the safety cards—The Right of Way card is the best card in the deck. However you play it (safety or coup foure) it provides immunity to stop/red lights and speed limits (the most numerous hazards in the deck) and acts as a perpetual Roll/Green Light so even if an opponent plays another hazard card on you, you only the remedy card for that hazard card.
It is possible to win a match (5000 points) in one round of cards. You must reach 1000 distance, completely use the draw pile, play no 200 distance cards, and most importantly have the luck to get all four safety cards AND play them as coup foure. I don’t believe I have ever seen it done but it is mathematically possible.
I will of course be using this computer version to bone up on my “trickery” as this game promotes deception and cutthroat play. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
