Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 12/05/2007
In 1991, Quantum Quality Productions released the first in a series of turn-based strategic war games called the Perfect General. The Perfect General is a two-person, head to head match played between two human adversaries, or one and computerized AI.
The Perfect General is scenario based and features a wide array of scenarios from which to choose. The battlefield can either be a historically accurate battleground, or a random scenario. Gamers also have the option of using the scenario editor to create custom battlefield. Each scenario is laid out as a series of standard hexagon-shaped tiles, each representing a type of terrain, such as: grass, city desert, water, or roadways.
As is standard with games of this nature, the terrain type has a direct bearing on the actual combat by limiting movement or adding to defensive bonuses.
There are ten units to work with at the beginning of the Perfect General: armored cars, infantry, three types of tank, bazookas, engineers, and three types of artillery. All but the artillery are essentially melee units and must attack a tile that is adjacent to itself; the artillery has ranged attack capabilities, but features a weaker defensive system and cannot move as far or as fast on each turn. Similarly, other units have distinct strengths and weaknesses. Engineers feature poor attack capabilities, but are master tacticians. Armored cars cannot attack well, but can move some of the less mobile units, such as infantry or artillery, with ease. The key is developing a balanced attack where units compliment one another to create a powerful fighting force.
The Perfect General has few real complaints. The AI is possibly not as strong as other war strategy games, but it is still accurate. There is a limited number of units from which to choose, giving the game a lack of depth that most people get over fairly quickly. The largest drawback to the lack of unit depth is actually the absence of air and naval units from all battles. The graphic display is good, the game play is cool and the controls are simple and very easy to figure out, giving The Perfect General a short, non-frustrating learning curve. Still, the goal of the game is straightforward: to eliminate your opponent using strategy and tactical maneuvering. It is great fun to play against human opponents, and the scenario editor adds flavor to human death matches. While not the most in depth and historically accurate war strategy available, it still has merit and is worth a download, especially for novice or intermediate strategists.
If you want pass your spare time with pleasure and fun it’s for you! You’ll be excited and satisfied!
