Game Review (written by Pawn5) Added on: 12/31/2006
The Perfect General 2 is actually a game I recall buying and playing in the mid-90s. It was published by QQP, Inc in 1994. QQP made several great strategy/war games before going out of business in 1995. Of course they created The Perfect General but they also created a game called Solitaire's Journey, which is a great solitaire game.
The Perfect General 2 is a great WWII war game. It is hex based, but you have the option to not show the hexes on the map. Personally, I used the hexes because it made planning moves easier for me. The game is also turn-based. Being turn-based, there is the issue with it taking quite some time for the AI to finish all of its moves before it is your turn to play again. Attacking is dependent on LOS (line-of-sight), which varies by unit and weather visibility. The player selects the land/air based units, which ones and quantity of each depends upon the scenario chosen. The choices consist of: tanks (4 different kinds), airplanes, several different types of infantry units, armoured personnel carriers, artillery & mines. The game offers the choice of selecting single scenarios (historical battles) and full campaigns. It has a fairly decent collection of varying land battles from WWII, in which you are able to re-enact, choosing which side you wish to play as. The PG2 also has a campaign editor, and there are still websites with downloadable campaigns. The game provides several options that help tailor the game to your choosing. You can control variables such as weather, AI ability and if enemy forces are visible on the map, etc... Lastly, the game provides player stat records, which is fun to keep track of your progress.
The graphics are great for VGA and the sound effects are awesome. The AI is much better than the AI in The Perfect General (1), but is very easy on the easy-fair AI levels. The downside of the AI is that it is known to cheat (not just my opinion, there are still records of people discussing this from the 1990's). It does have the ability to play a friend and a modem play option. I recall playing my brother, who was much more of a challenge than the AI.
All in all, it is a great game and is a lot of fun. Even if you are not a strategy war game fan, you should try this one out.
