Game Review (written by Karen) Added on: 11/26/2007
RoboSport was developed by Maxis Software Inc. in 1991. It’s a strategy game that allows you to program commands in advance and proceed simultaneously in combat mode. The robots can be controlled by the computer or human. There are four levels of intelligence in which the robots can be set, ranging from stupid to ferocious while human controlled robots can be programmed or edited.
After programming you watch an animation of the outcome using the games VCR feature. Editing and viewing ends when the allotted time runs out or a winner is declared. You win by either completing the goal or defeating the enemy robots.
There are five battle scenarios: Survival, Capture the Flag, Hostage, Treasure Hunt and Baseball. It includes multiplayer options. Play on two computers connected via modem or serial links, or each player has a turn at the computer setting up moves.
The game includes eight weapons systems: rifle, missile, zap, burst, auto, kamikaze, grenade, and time bomb. It Includes 24 battlefields with digitized sounds of battle. There are five types of robots having different armour protection and weapon systems. I found the stealth robot to be somewhat unique as it cannot be seen unless moving or scanned from an adjacent square. Score is calculated by damage points. The length of the scan and the speed of the target determines the hit. This game is so easy to control, you will find yourself hooked within minutes.
RoboSport has some ups and downs. The sound effects are nice but if no one is under attack the game is quiet. If you start to hear crashes or screams, you know the teams are exchanging fire which adds a bit of excitement. The outcome of the game depends on the type of armour and weapons you’re using along with the distance you are from the enemy when firing or receiving fire. It is not your traditional war game and if you enjoy programming computers for viewing the outcome, this is the game for you. On the other hand, if you think strategic programming is a waste of time and you want to get right to the fight, then think twice before playing this game.
