Game Review (written by Ademonreborn) Added on: 01/28/2007
A very under-rated game that started an empire! I have played this particular game for over ten years (quite regularly) and can well attest to its merit. Involving characters from the celebrated Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, this game includes nearly all (in one form or another) of those characters. Navigating within their world, you find yourself commanding one of the forces that changed a country, perhaps even a warlord of you own creation.
The battle sequences are difficult to match, comparing it to other Koei games of the same era. The castle construction as well as the individual unit maneuvers that can be done make the battles quite involved. The great differences between playing the beginner and advanced will make sure that all players of all skill levels can enjoy this game.
The complexity involved with the individual city development kept going for a long while after I started playing, truly a different experience when applied to the Romance games that Koei puts out today.
However there are certain limitations inherent with this game. While I have played this game for a long time, there are still options I haven’t been able to use, or events I haven’t been able to activate. For anyone who has ever read this novel, you will find it nearly impossible to create (or follow) the storyline, which clearly is not a problem for the current generation of games from Koei.
To be fair, though, the scene graphics are not as bad as other games of the same genre, the same time, or even the same manufacturer. Once you get beyond the generic face types, you will no doubt enjoy the individual faces that they do include. As a fun side note, if you have a Hex Editor and a little time you will be able to create your own faces within the confines of those three generic face types.
As an introduction, though, to this particular story, or these particular characters, it is a very credible game. You don’t have a great need to know the actual story line to be able to win or even understand what is going on. Any player who enjoys a quality strategy game that will take a good length of time to play will get a great deal out of this game, and will be happy that they played it.
